Movie Commentary: Mamma Mia!

C'mon, tough guy, it's a musical based on the songs of ABBA. LRK and her family are big fans and I don't mind the Swedish supergroup.

They use the good songs. We're talking "Super Trooper," "S.O.S.," "The Winner Takes It All" and "Money, Money, Money" (sadly, not The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase's version) and the song that's been in my head for the past week - "Mamma Mia." They also feature ABBA's two best known songs, "Dancing Queen" and "Take a Chance On Me" among others.

"Mamma Mia!" is not without some definitely cheesy parts and overacting. Plus, I found Sophie's fiance to be quite douchey.

The movie setting is beautiful, though, set on some Greek island. And the general tone is fun and includes some genuinely humorous moments... even from a guy's point-of-view. Overall the movie was an enjoyable experience.

+ Not sure what to think of that "Pineapple Express" movie so far, but I'm really liking the use of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" in the trailer.

As a Response, I Feigned Apathy

Wow... tuning into NBC's Wimbledon coverage this morning - the peacock network is really breaking into the hipster music bag. Their opening segment played to The Ting Tings "Great DJ." Then, leading into the break before heading off to the Serena Williams / Bethany Mattek match, they featured M.I.A.'s "Boyz."

Is the Freelance Hellraiser coordinating music for NBC's Wimbledon coverage?

+ It's Over, Lady! The NYT's wonderful Maureen Dowd succinctly sums up her day in Unity, NH by offering a glimpse into the idiocy of a few hardcore HRC loyalists, name-dropping former Duke baller/current Barry O body man Reggie Love and painting a picture of Bill Clinton's current mindset that made me think of an infant with soiled drawers.

Random Post and Pics

My girl M.I.A. has a new site. Wow.

Resident expert John Hodgman takes a break from PC v. mac to stop by The Daily Show and explain the appeal of ultimate fighting.

1. Elijah Dukes is clearly MLB's most angry/crazy/bizarre man (Milton Bradley 2007?). And he is quickly joining Freel, M. Cabrera and Josh Hamilton as players I keep track of on-and-off the field. I like characters.

2. Is there any way the 'Nati can ship Dunn or Griffey to Tampa Bay for Elijah Dukes? Because I would love to have that guy on the Reds (and be rid of Dunn or Griffey - preferrably Dunn).

Finally got a snap of my favorite poster I referenced framing a few months ago. In all its glory, here it is:

Bonus: my new BustedTees shirt arrived!

Copy Cat

I totally can't believe and am honored that M.I.A. copied off my trivia team name (Bird Flu) and has named the first single off her upcoming album "Bird Flu". That's awesome.

Also, I recommend checking out M.I.A.'s "London People" version of Fergie's "London Bridge" (mixed by Loot). You will feel significantly less guilty and dirty about liking it.

+ Borat is denied access to the White House to give Dubya an invite to his Cultural Learnings of America to Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan screening. Borat's comment regarding Uzbek propoganda made me laugh.

+ I hope FLOODgates joins SBB III. I'd like to renew our hoops rivalry. Plus, he is a friendly face.
