The opening of the NFL season combined with Mr. Sparkle's inability to find a 2006 fantasy football league officially put the kybosh on Mr. Sparkle's 2006 campaign. But - is it wrong to still take note of how players from your 2005 squad and players you were planning to draft perform? Granted, Culpepper and Shawn Alexander didn't light the world on fire, but Frank Gore, Anquan Boldin, Neil Rackers, Reggie Bush, Lawrence Maroney and the Jags D had nice outings. Plus, Antonio Gates and Phillip Rivers play tonight. I'll just play the 2006 season in my head.
The 'Birds opened '06 in style, taking out the Texans. The trio of McNabb, Westbrook and Stallworth looks promising. And L.J. Smith seems bent on proving me wrong. Gotta like that University of Cincinnati product, Trent Cole. Fly, Eagles, fly! And the Cowboys lost, to boot. Haha.
Texans: Williams over Bush is looking good so far.
The classic JB made a world of difference in the CBS studio Sunday. Their studio show and halftime is actually watchable now! Conversely, the lack of JB took its toll on the clusteff-like FOX set. No doubt the FOX suits are kicking themselves over not going with my pick for studio anchor, the erstwhile Brit Hume. Tunes-wise, the NBC Sunday Night Football theme by John Williams just doesn't do it for me. It reminds me of an old USFL highlight package. Now, the USFL was clutch, but Williams' NBC theme just does not carry the NFL brand properly.
I didn't expect Penn State to beat Notre Dame at South Bend, but I also didn't expect them to lose 41-17 either. Yeesh. In addition, "the Poz" seems to be a step slow coming back from his Orange Bowl injury. I'm pleased with the play of Dan Connor and Dr. Sean Lee, PhD, however.
What did Ron Franklin do to ESPN? What? I remember back when I was in high school, college, and shortly thereafter, I looked forward to watching Franklin (and Gottfried) broadcast the primetime game on the mothership. It was an event. Now this venerable play-by-play man gets relegated to mop-up duty on the deuce's 6:00 PM game. Just another reason ESPN stinks.
Overall, a solid weekend of football.
