Arab TV network MBC recently started airing an Arabized version of The Simpsons. "Al Shamshoon" features the same animation and characters, but is modified to be "more accessible, and acceptable, to Arab audiences."
For instance, "Omar Shamshoon" guzzles soda instead of beer. He also doesn't eat bacon or hot dogs, nor does he frequent Moe's.
It also seems that part of the The Simpsons Arabization was making it less funny. Chatter around the Arab blogs and chat sessions has not been kind to "Al Shamshoon." I like this quote from California State University-Stanislaus professor As'ad AbuKhalil, after viewing a promo episode:
"It was just painful ... The guy who played Homer Simpson was one of the most unfunny people I ever watched. Just drop the project, and air reruns of Tony Danza's show instead."Ouch. [D'oh Arabized Simpsons not getting many laughs]
