A Little Ridiculous

Thanks to PTI chiming in this evening, I am posting this before I wanted to (Friday AM)...

Since it is buried in women's hoops, you might have missed that University of Tennessee star junior Candace Parker announced she will skip her senior season to concentrate on the Olympics and enter the WNBA.

Seriously?

Conventional wisdom says she is playing in front of more people (and probably making more cash) right now at UT than she will (on both fronts) in the WNBA.

Clutch TINWA operative BAH responds, "I think the world has ended, next thing will be Freshman girls wanting to jump. Maybe that 6'8" girl will go straight to the pros! LOL"

She better hope she finds some endorsement deals.
That looks like a dude guarding her in that picture.

Unfair! Unbalanced! I think the fact that she's a red-shirt junior who is graduating following the season might be worth mentioning. (For those not into sports, "red-shirt" means she was granted an extra year of athletic eligibility due to having to miss an entire season while recovering from knee surgeries.) So I guess if holding up the academic half of the bargain and being "eager to take this next step" in her career is ridiculous, well, this world, the next and then fireworks, I guess.

I'll grant you the money's not great in the context of pro sports - she's in line to make $48K in salary next year with the opportunity for bonuses up to $28K more. Being the "dunker" could land her some endorsement opportunities as well. Not bad scratch.

Brett responding to a college sports post (Parker is still in college)? What???

College is special. You shouldn't be in a rush to get to the working world!

Yes, in the context of pro sports, the WNBA salary scale is quite miniscule. I read today each team is allotted 750K per roster.

She will have already graduated by the this summer, so what's the point in coming back. The average WNBA player earns $46,000 - $60,000, with $87,000 as the league maximum. Doesn't seem to bad to play some basketball.

Did some more research and it looks like the cap was raised to $100,000 in 2007.
