My former junior high hoops coach (above) was sentenced yesterday to 8 1/2 to 30 years for having sex with one of his players. I guess I need to mention that he went on to coach girls' basketball and softball. He was arrested for having sex with a girl (she was 15 at the time). The gender, however, is really inconsequential.
When I first learned that he was charged with deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and a host of other charges, I wasn't surprised. Back when I was in junior high, we (my teammates and I) all thought he was sweet on our female classmates (in that creepy way). He would flirt with them, touch them...sort of half-fondle them. It was uncomfortable.
He also dated, and later married, one of his former players (she is pictured behind him). The guy just exuded creepiness. I'm glad my sister never really got involved with athletics. In my mind, it wasn't a matter of if he would eff up and get caught, but when.
